Deception 75: Characteristics of the Self Life

When we think too highly of ourselves, we can come up with abominations that we think are good and then we can present them to the world as if they came from God but they did not come from God, they came from our own mind and our own flesh. Those abominable works come from that dark, filthy region that some call "the self life." It is a hidden part of man, that often goes unchecked. It harbors his ways, his pride, his evilness--like with Dr. So-and-So who glows with unmitigated pride every time somebody introduces him as "Doctor So-and-So." In these people, the self life goes unhindered and unchecked and makes all kinds of decisions and moves and statements and entertains all kinds of thoughts with no fear that God sees all those thoughts.

There are whole churches and so-called Christian organizations that are filled with people who live with an unchecked self life. In such organizations, practically the whole gang is like this--starting with the pastor/founder/director/president/executive director or whatever the name is of the head honcho. The objections of anyone in the organization who is not flesh driven are not heard. This person is not heard, is grieved, and just goes along with the party line (until they accept that they must depart from that group). These organizations are run by the flesh and, as a result of that, they produce abominations that they say are done in the name of the Lord. They may even pray for God's blessings on these abominations.

In January of 2000, I was confronted with my need to examine the self life. I was undone by the experience of reading the following article, but little did I know that that examination would continue, unabated, for a whole year. I don't stand today as one perfected, but as one that has looked, and seen, some of the abominations that lie within man's breast ("man" as in me specifically). As a result of this experience, and other grievous examinations, I have been taught to fear the fact that God, the holy and righteous Judge, sees the workings that are working inside of me--even if nobody else does. Fear of the Lord checks these abominations and disallows those that fear God from letting these things go unconfessed and unchallenged and unstopped.

We live in a day of famine and dearth of leadership and it is like it is every man for himself. We have to gaze on God's word and take heed to it and strive to enter in at that strait gate, for many shall seek to enter in and shall not be able. We need to make the tree good and the fruit good and we need to clean the inside of the cup that the outside of it may be clean. Clean our insides that our outside works may be of use.

Psalms 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
