Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden

(Based on Genesis chapters 1 - 3)

GOD CREATED ALL THINGS AND GOD CREATED MAN.

In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. He made everything in six days. The earth, water, light, and the firmament/heaven. God made the grass, the seeds, the herbs, trees, and fruit. God made so many good things. In fact, everything that God made was good. God made the sun, the moon, and the stars. He made the beasts, the animals--the cattle, the creeping thing, and the beast of the field. And God also made man. God made man in his own image--

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The Bible gives us some more information on the creation of the first man, Adam; he was made from the dust of the ground--

Genesis 2:7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

GOD PLANTED A GARDEN IN EDEN AND PUT THE MAN, ADAM, THERE.

God planted a garden eastward in Eden and he put Adam there.

Genesis 2:8  And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.

In Eden, the Lord made trees to grow out of the ground--every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food. The garden of Eden must have been very beautiful. God also made the tree of life to grow in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Genesis 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Plants need water so that they can grow and thrive. God made a river to go forth out of Eden to water the garden . That river became into four heads or rivers. The Bible tells us the names of those ancient rivers (see Genesis 2:10-14)--

  • The Pison river,
  • The Gihon river (which may be the Nile River in Africa),
  • The Hiddekel river (which may be the Tigris located in the region of modern day Iraq), and
  • The river Euphrates which is still called by the same name today and is located in the middle east in the area of Iraq.

These are very old and ancient things that we are talking about and things that are very exciting to know about and to think about and to remember.

God put the man that he had formed in the garden of Eden. The man's name was Adam. God gave Adam everything he needed.

Genesis 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

God gave Adam a command. He told Adam that Adam could eat freely of every tree of the garden. Adam had plenty that he could eat. But God told Adam that there was one tree that he was not to eat of--the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told Adam that in the day that Adam ate of that tree, Adam would surely die.

Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

GOD MADE A WOMAN TO BE WITH ADAM, HER NAME WAS EVE

Adam was alone.

Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

God made a woman to be with Adam, to be his wife. Adam named his wife, Eve (see Genesis 3:20). The Bible tells us how God made Eve--

Genesis 2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

Adam and Eve were the first people that ever lived on the earth. Adam was the first man and Eve was the very first woman. God made a perfect world for them to live in. God blessed Adam and Even and he gave them good instructions, too, so that they would know what to do on the earth.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29  And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

SIN ENTERS THE WORLD

Adam and Eve were perfect. They had never done anything bad, they had never sinned--they had never disobeyed God. They had peace and were not ashamed or afraid. Now there was a serpent in the garden that asked Eve a question [In the book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible, we find out that the serpent was Devil and Satan (see Revelation 12:9).]

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

The woman answered the serpent--

Genesis 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

The serpent contradicts and speaks against what God says--

Genesis 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Eve decided to hearken to the serpent instead of hearkening to God and she ate the fruit and gave to Adam with her and he ate the fruit, too. We do not know what kind of fruit it was, we just know that it was the fruit of the tree of which they were not supposed to eat.

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

BECAUSE OF SIN, ADAM AND EVE HAVE TROUBLES.

After Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit, they were changed. They were no longer content and worry-free. They knew that they were naked and this concerned them. They took some fig leaves and made themselves some aprons so that they could cover their nakedness.

Genesis 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

When Adam and Eve heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, they hid themselves. It was not like before when they were not ashamed. Now that they had listened to the devil and disobeyed God, they were afraid because they were naked. They were not like they used to be. Now they had fear. When God tells us to do something, it is good for us to do. When we disobey God, we have troubles.

Genesis 3:8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

God asked Adam a question--

Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

Adam responded--

Genesis 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

God asked Eve a question, too--

Genesis 3:13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Eve said that the serpent beguiled her. The serpent led her away from the truth with a question and a lie. The devil is still alive today tricking people with questions and lies. We must always obey God if we want to be safe and secure.

THE SERPENT CURSED

God cursed the serpent.

Genesis 3:14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

EVE PUNISHED

God put a punishment on the woman--

Genesis 3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

ADAM PUNISHED

God put a punishment on the man--

Genesis 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Even though Adam and Eve had done wickedly, God clothed them. God is very merciful--

Genesis 3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

ADAM AND EVE SENT FORTH FROM THE GARDEN OF EDEN

Adam and Eve had to leave the garden of Eden lest they take of the tree of life--

Genesis 3:22  And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

LIFE FOR ADAM AND EVE AFTER THEY LEFT THE GARDEN OF EDEN

After Adam and Eve were driven out of the garden of Eden, they had many children--and all of their children were sinners like they were. Adam named his wife's name Eve because she was the mother of all living. Adam and Eve lived about 6,000 years ago. They died like God told them that they would. If they had not sinned, they would not have died.

LIFE FOR THE CHILDREN OF ADAM AND EVE

Adam is our father and Eve is our mother. We all came from them. The Bible teaches that when Adam sinned, sin entered the world and that is why we all sin. It was passed on to us from Adam. We have all done wrong. And just like Adam and Eve died because of sin, we have to die because of our sins.

God made the earth perfect. When man decided to disobey God, sin entered the world. That is why today there is pain, crying, lies, and all kinds of sins like lying, stealing, killing, fighting, witchcraft, and more. That is why the television, movies, are full of evil. That is why people are bad--because of sins. Even today, that old serpent called the Devil and Satan is our adversary and he is still tempting men to do evil deeds. He is still lying and telling them that it is okay to disobey God and that there is a life in sin. It is not okay to disobey God and there is no life in sin. The wages of sin is death. Adam and Eve are dead. God warned them that if they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that they would die, and they did die and so do we, their children.

When people disobey God and do not follow his word and they die, they go to a place called hell, a place of everlasting fire and torment. The torment does not end. God does not want people to go hell and the lake of fire. God sent his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. If we repent of our sins and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and obey his word, the Bible, we will be saved. We will have a life with God right now and then when we die, we will go to heaven and not to hell. The Lord Jesus Christ will help us to live uprightly and we will like living uprightly and being with God.

We did not come from some made-up apeman/monkeyman/fictional, hairy ape caveman (There have been cave dwellers, however. There are people who still live in caves today--some even have air conditioning). Our progenitors were men. Their names are on record. Adam lived around 4,000 BC. The earth is about 6,000 years old.
